Will the 4G rollout create business for marketing recruiters?

It's not all doom and gloom for the UK's retail industry, although the recent closure of mainstays like HMV and the BBC montages of empty shopfronts might give you that impression.

According to ecommerce veteran eBay, the ongoing rollout of 4G internet services across the country could offer a chink of light at the end of the tunnel for beleaguered retailers - as well as creating business for marketing recruiters keen to offer their services to the industry.

This is because companies that wish to take advantage of the super-fast broadband service will need to ensure that their marketing and sales teams have the best, most digitally-engaged experts at their disposal.

Olivier Ropars, senior director of m-commerce at the firm, said: "Consumers today want convenience and speed. The arrival of universal 4G will bring with it a more immersive, instant and intimate shopping experience than ever before - putting the most exciting features of mobile retail as we know it into high definition."

Research from eBay and retail analysts Conlumino suggested that the change in mobile internet services could be worth £1.8 billion to switched-on UK businesses.

However, given the high standards expected by consumers used to m-commerce and shopping online over their smartphones and tablets, companies that fail to have the right digital marketing in place are likely to be left behind by their rivals.

There is undeniably a market in place - 55 per cent of Britons use mobile devices for buying goods more often than they did 12 months ago.

Given that the major issues raised by Brits have been a lack of reliability and slow speeds when browsing on their mobiles, it seems clear that the 4G revolution will have a major impact on m-commerce levels across the country.

The coalition government has previously pledged to ensure that the UK has Europe's best broadband network in the next few years.
